Last year, after we had several families from out of town express interest in our Elementary Strings Camp, we decided to expand the camp into a week-long program with something for every member of the family!
During the program we are offering classes for both children AND adults taught by world-class faculty from around the country. We have also partnered with Sitka Summer Music Festival to provide families with the opportunity to see some of today’s top musicians perform in three concerts—two of which are free! Combined with affordable family housing, Elementary String Camp is the perfect music-filled family vacation!
Teaching the Elementary String Camp is Kirsten Docter of the Cavani String Quartet. Kirsten is a member of the viola and chamber music faculties at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and a visiting assistant professor of chamber music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. A first-prize winner of both the Primrose International and American String Teachers Association Viola Competitions, Kirsten has performed in major series and festivals throughout North America and Europe.
String Camp runs from 1-3pm, but we are also offering string students the opportunity to participate in our Morning Elementary Camp, which features classes in music, theater, movement and visual arts and runs from 8:15am-12:00pm—for a full day of fun.
Furthermore, for all you jealous parents out there, our second annual Adult Fine Arts Camp will run the same week as String Camp. Adult Camp course offerings this year include African Drumming, Animation, Ceramics, Exploring Chamber Music, Poetry, and more. For a complete list of classes visit our website. Evening childcare may be provided, depending on enrollment.
Family housing will be offered from June 9_15. Housing is dorm style, with a shared bathroom and kitchen area. Family rooms include two twin beds and room for children to sleep on the floor. The campus is within walking distance of a grocery store and several delicious restaurants.
