Hello from Sitka!
The 2008 middle school session of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp got underway Sunday! Campers number 192, hailing from 20 Alaskan communities, including Sitka, and from six other states and the country of Qatar. Students arrived Sunday morning and afternoon and met our 31 faculty members, who have arrived from throughout the country to teach over 60 classes.
Last night, at the camp’s first evening ArtShare performance, students enjoyed performances by a jazz combo including music faculty Bob Athayde on piano, Mike Sullivan on sax, director Roger Schmidt on trombone, Ed Littlefield on percussion, Brian Neal on trumpet, and board member Peter Apathy on bass; a reading of original fiction by writing teacher Vinnie Wilhelm; an original masked theater performance by faculty members Joy Barrett, Julia Smith, WT McRae, and Beverly Mann; and classical music performances by soprano Karen Neal, Brian Neal, counselor Max Karler, and high school brass quintet members Christina and Adam.
Tonight’s ArtShare will feature our fabulous and versatile counseling staff! All ArtShares are free and open to the public and take place, unless otherwise noted, at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School Gym. A full schedule is available at http://fineartscamp.org/sfac_news.html.
